What is a general anaesthetic?
A general anaesthetic is a procedure where you or your child are put to sleep - it is sometimes described as a state of "controlled unconsciousness".
A combination of medicines are used to:
- make you fall asleep,
- make your muscles relax, and
- make sure you don't feel any pain.
General anaesthesia is only carried out by a highly specialised medical team, called "anaesthetists". To ensure the highest level of safety, this procedure can only be carried out in hospital.
